Jill Tracy: Belle of The Edwardian Ball

One of our favorite customers is musical evocateur and Belle of The Edwardian Ball, Jill Tracy. Dubbed "the cult darling of the Underworld" by LA Weekly and "the femme fatale for the thinking man" by The San Francisco Chronicle, Jill's music evokes another time and place. A place that could be inside a beautiful dream or, more likely, a glamorous nightmare.

Jill's musical gifts are matched only by her fantastic sense of style and we are delighted she often wears a House of Nines original on stage when she performs. We are very excited to announce that she will soon start carrying some House of Nines exclusive styles at her online retail shop!
Jill has been performing at The Edwardian Ball since its inception 13 years ago and her name has become synonymous with this ever-growing event for lovers of Edward Gorey, ballroom dancers, the Steam Punk set, and Edwardian-bedecked revelers. Jill's haunting songs and stories set the mood for this annual music and art festival.
Recently, Jill has continued with her series of concerts at The Conservatory of Flowers in Golden Gate Park. Working with San Francisco Conservatory of Flowers, Jill Tracy has created an unusual after-dark series focusing on a variety of alluring subjects (poisoning, alchemy, ghosts and violins, perfumes) while allowing audiences to tour the wondrous Victorian Greenhouse at night.

Jill is the first musician in history to receive a grant from the famed Mütter Museum in Philadelphia. The medical history museum contains a collection of medical oddities and antique medical equipment and Jill's new project for 2013 will be based on their collection.

Jill Tracy is also returning to the studio with the legendary David J (Bauhaus), and her song "The Colour of the Flame" will be released as a 7" collector's vinyl shared with Blixa Bargeld (Einstürzende Neubauten/ Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds) for Swedish publishers Malört Förlag.

Customer Photos: Megan
The good stuff just keeps rolling in.
Here's another super customer, Megan, who has I-don't-even-know-how-many House of Nines Design hats at this point. She has an eye for one-of-a-kind and custom pieces, and uses them to accessorize her wardrobe in a way that's really fun. And she's been buying hats of mine since the beginning of my business, so looking through her collection is fun for me, like seeing old friends from years ago.
Here's Megan in a one-of-a-kind 'Belle Epoch' mini top hat in black fur felt with black and white striped ribbon trim and a big cockade. She was using this one as her Facebook profile photo for a while, and I was very flattered.
Top hats at the Aquarium? I'm all for it. I think these were taken at San Francisco's Aquarium of the Bay, where I recently did some research for aquatic-inspired hats for Spring / Summer 2013 (stay tuned).
Here's another 'Belle Epoch' from Megan's collection. This was a one-of-kind item as well, because I only had two of these antique mother of pearl buckles used to provide a knot for the bow, and I plan to use the other one on a totally different hat. (But, I still have just a few pieces left of this vintage, very limited vibrant purple long-nap fur felt if anyone is interested.) She's further customized it on her own by swapping in feathers from a red 'Una' top hat.

Ok. So, in the following photo, Megan is not wearing one of my hats. It was mixed in with the photos she sent me, and when I realized it was her, I was so humored that I had to share it. This is Megan in Wesley Crusher drag, standing proudly in front of Our Fair City, the future home of the United Federation of Planets. It made my day.
When I let Megan know how happy the last photo made my inner geek, she sent me the following photo of Wesley Crusher meeting Wil Wheaton, and it made my MONTH. Judging by Wil's reaction, it did the same for him. Assuming that this face of Wil's means "Brilliant!" (what else?) I'm feeling the same way about her.

Customer Photos: More Jo
Love these great photos recently received from Joanna in Australia.
Joanna is a fantastic regular customer of House of Nines, I've literally lost count of how many custom hats she has commissioned over the years. This custom 'Wellington' is her most recent purchase.
The style may be more familiar to you in its animal print form, which looks like this:
Jo requested black long-nap felt instead of the animal print, but the ribbon trim is the same. As you can see in the photo below, instead of stripped hackle feathers, we went with curled peacock swords. Jo said the photos were taken on a windy day so the feathers were being blown around a bit. And we added a birdcage veiling over the eyes. I have hundreds and hundreds of bolts of rare antique silk veiling in stock, and this is one of my personal favorites, it's got a geometric pattern but is so delicate.
Jo usually prefers to go with custom designs instead of choosing a ready-to-wear style, and it's always a lot of fun working on something special for her.

Stacy kindly sent me this photo of her glamorous self wearing a 'Viola' mini top hat in leopard, at the Kentucky Derby this May.

Customer Photos / Custom Work: Megana and George
I just received these photos from Megana, a great regular customer
who has bought several of my hats for herself and her daughter George.
George is pictured below wearing a Kit Kit mini bowler in long-nap fur felt with a cockade and feather spikes. She has enjoyed wearing it around the house and during a recent vaudeville-themed dance performance at school. I'm always so excited to outfit performers, especially such adorable ones.
And I recently completed the following custom hat for George's mom, Megana. Please excuse the fast-and-dirty quality of the photo- I needed to get this one out the door for a fast delivery so I didn't have time to take a proper studio photo.
We designed this Vermeer cocktail hat to match an outfit Megana had custom made at Dark Garden, the trim was made using the same iridescent black/wine taffeta fabric as that she chose for her corset.
The rosette is made of layers and layers of pleated taffeta, alternating with black silk gazar, and frayed at the edges because Megana let me know that she likes texture. It also has black vintage crocheted veiling and a matching silk taffeta lining. I included several sets of feathers to wear with it, all matching the hat but totally different from each other so she can try out different looks- curled pheasant (seen here), fluffy wine-colored ostrich floss plumes, and others. I can't wait to see photos of how Megana looks in the whole outfit.

My favorite songstress, Jill Tracy, has certainly been busy this year.
In January, as always, she was the Belle of the Ball at the 2012 Edwardian Ball in San Francisco. I've lost track of how many years I've been hat-ing Jill for shows, and this year she wore a black Maxima. Here's a video of her performing "The Color of the Flame" with aerial artist Sasha from the Vau de Vire Society.
She wore the same hat a few weeks later during her appearance as special guest performer at the Mutter Ball 2012 at the Mutter Museum / College of Physicians of Philadelphia. She later let me know how easy it was to travel with her Maxima, it's glamorous but also soft and relatively packable.

Here's an interview Jill did with Director of the Mütter Museum, Robert Hicks. They talk about many topics, including the Mutter, haunted castles, her "Spontaneous Musical Combustion" method, and the song "The Color of the Flame", from the first video in this post, which was inspired by the work of Swedish 19th century writer/occultist Stanislaw Przybyszewski.
Jill's involvement with the Mutter continues with her latest project- I'm happy to congratulate her as the first musician ever to be awarded a grant from the Wood Institute, College of Physicians of Philadelphia, to compose music inside the museum. Be sure to keep up with Jill’s new blog “An Excavation of Musical Spirits,” as she discusses the project. And don't miss this fantastic interview about it with Cristina Zuazua of Chain D.L.K. Magazine.
She's also been hard at work preparing to open Cabinet 45, an online store selling the work of artists she admires. I am so excited to be included in this group, and Jill and I have been collaborating on special hat designs just for the shop. Cabinet 45 should be open for business later this year.

Lots of Great New Customer Photos
For your viewing pleasure, a bunch of great new customer photos have come in during the last few weeks.
Here's Stephanie having a holiday smooch under the misteltoe in her custom Marlene midi top hat. Trimmed with silk veiling and curled peacock swords to match the saucy green dress she wore under a vintage tuxedo tailcoat. I love to see photos of Stephanie, it always seems to be a fun time wherever she is.
I was so honored to make this Yvette top hat for Gail, another of my faithful regular customers, to wear at her wedding. For trim, we chose pale lavender ostrich floss feathers, to match the shirred silk shrug she wore over her dress. She's also wearing a custom corset by Dark Garden Corsetry. She looks so lovely and happy!
Here's steampunk/romance/Victorian paranormal fantasy author Natalie Zaman (center) wearing her new Viola midi top hat with fellow authors Leanna Renee Hieber and Cate Hart at this year's 'Gaslamp Gathering', the Romantic Times Booklover's Convention in Chicago. Clearly, a good time was had by all!

First Custom-Shaped Hat
Just delivered the first hat custom-shaped with my conformer set, a Kingston fedora in charcoal felt with blue trim and vulturine feathers. Justin had been having no luck finding ready-to-wear hats that fit comfortably, but his conformed hat is a perfect fit. Justin was really happy with it, he's wearing it to the SF Opera tonight.
For those of you who missed my earlier post about this, the conformer (or conformateur) set is a fantastic and very rare 19th century machine used to customize a hat to the customer's exact head size and *shape*. The fit of a hat is a lot like the fit of a shoe- to be worn comfortably (or at all), the hat has to be the correct size and shape for the head. Mass market hat companies make all their hats to an average shape, which means that they fit a few people well and everyone else not so well. Many guys think that they have trouble fitting into hats because of the sizing, when usually it's the shape that's the problem. I am super excited to now be able to offer custom shaping this special service to my clients. All that's required is for me to have access to your head once to take the initial measurements, then even long-distance clients can be assured of a perfect fit. I'm planning to have a special case made for the set, so I can take it with me and measure long-distance clients when I travel.

Customer Photo from Joanna
Here's another great photo from Joanna in Brisbane. She's wearing a custom-designed 'Belle Epoch' mini top hat, the first of many one-of-a-kind hats Joanna has commissioned from me.
She requested something in a navy, brown and black color scheme, with a touch of steampunk style, to go with an outfit she planned wear to a Mad Hatter themed tea party. I always enjoy working with Joanna, she has such great ideas and is open to collaborating, which is inspiring to me as a designer.
